An Indo-French Virtual University Project
2016
Indo-French cooperation has existed for several decades, and has flourished in the recent period, with a number of flagship programmes and cross-border schemes in science, technology and management. Virtual universities refer to both conventional campus-based (hybrid and brick-and-mortar) universities offering online courses, and purely virtual universities with all their activities delivered online via the Internet. A virtual university is involved as a direct provider of learning opportunities and uses the Internet to deliver its programmes and courses while receiving tuition support. We propose in this ultimate chapter an innovative architecture for an Indo-French knowledge management sy…
Influences on Master’s Degree Students’ Economic Knowledge
2020
Despite the growing body of research, little is known about students’ economic knowledge at the beginning of, or at various points throughout, their master’s degree programs. In this study different impact factors on students’ microeconomic knowledge are tested. Based on the “utilization of learning opportunities model” by Helmke we focus on 1) individual and sociodemographic characteristics of the students, 2) their learning potential and study-related characteristics and 3) the characteristics and structure of their learning environment. For each of the three influencing factors we used different indicators that were expected to correlate with students’ knowledge. We tested the assumption…
A review of recent research in EFL motivation: Research trends, emerging methodologies, and diversity of researched populations
2021
Abstract The increasing interest in English as a foreign language (EFL) across the globe has necessitated learning opportunities that engage and sustain students’ motivation to learn English. This paper aims to provide an analysis of trends in EFL motivation between 2016 and 2020. While examining 90 studies published during this time frame, we have focused on an overview of methodologies, theories, and backgrounds of researched populations. We have also aimed to summarize the key findings of the literature in order to discuss the emergent themes in current EFL motivation research. Hence, this paper offers a comprehensive analysis and synthesis of recent EFL motivation research trends. Altho…
Optional Learning Opportunities
2018
The effects of offering and seizing optional learning opportunities rarely have been investigated. Thus, university instructors have no basis on which to decide whether offering optional learning opportunities to their students would be worth the effort and which students would seize and benefit from them. To target these questions, we designed a teaching−learning format in which we offered psychology undergraduates optional learning opportunities throughout the semester. We investigated the cognitive and motivational prerequisites of N=108 students who seized versus forwent the learning opportunities and compared their learning outcomes both with and without controlling for prerequisites.…

COVID-19 y escuela a distancia: viejas y nuevas desigualdades
2021
Exploring learning analytics on YouTube: a tool to support students interactions analysis
2021
YouTube is a free online video-sharing platform that is often used by students for their learning activities. The interactions of the students when using the platform to shape new concepts, are worth to be investigated to better understand and to optimize the learning opportunities that take place in this platform. In this paper, we investigate which types of data are relevant to analyse the interactions of students with content on YouTube, and we introduce a new tool that emulates students’ interactions with the platform in order to provide data to be used in supporting Learning Analytics approaches. Our preliminary study inspects the tool effectiveness in data collection and analyses the …
Behavioural treatment of improper eating by an institutionalised woman with profound intellectual disability—description of a successful intervention
2002
Intensive 11-day behavioural training of an institutionalised woman with profound intellectual disability was used to teach proper eating by reducing her eating errors. The methods used included an increased number of learning opportunities, graduated guidance, the use of social reinforcement, and mild punishment through simple correction of eating errors. The treatment was faded into a maintenance phase. After the intensive training phase, the participant ceased to eat with her fingers from a plate, and her eating changed to a more tidy habit. She was also released from having her hand tied during the meals. The results were maintained during an informal follow-up 4 years later.
A Pilot Study on Developing Newsgames in Collaboration between Journalism and Computer Science Students
2019
Abstract Producing digital and interactive journalistic products offers unique and important new learning opportunities for journalism education. This study analysed the experiences of two pilot courses on so-called ‘newsgames’ in a Finnish university in 2015 and 2017. The data consisted of the newsgames and other materials produced by the students, student feedback concerning the course and observations of teachers throughout the project. Our analysis demonstrates how producing newsgames in the context of higher education may foster project-based learning experiences, something that has been relatively rare in traditional journalism education. Collaboration with media companies also offere…
